The village

A cozy picturesque historic home in the charming resort village of Menthon-Saint-Bernard, located on the shores of Lake Annecy at the foot of the French Alps in the Haute-Savoie region of France (bordered by Italy and Switzerland). The natural beauty of the lakeside village surrounded by mountains and its impressive chateau have inspired artists. Whether you enjoy hiking, golf, paraglading, skiing, or relaxing at the beach, Menthon has something to offer everyone.
The beautiful city of Annecy, just 8 miles away, is known as the “Venice of France.” Its small medieval quarter is laced with canals, flower-covered bridges and cobblestone streets; its quaint cafés, open-air markets, museums and the massive castle give you a taste of old France. Chamonix and the Mont Blanc range are an hour’s drive, as well as Geneva airport and Paris is a 4-hour train ride.

Meet Suzanne, your French language teacher and host.

Passionate about foreign languages (she’s studied 9 of them!) and theatre, Suzanne initially studied history and tourism in order to become a tour guide before she changed careers. She worked for 10 years in publishing at the Pasteur Institute in Paris where she also created and taught a French class for post-doctoral researchers. In 2005, she moved to the Annecy area and worked as a French and English teacher for hearing-impaired children: she therefore uses visual and gestural teaching methods when working with students with learning disabilities. Suzanne has also taught religion in a middle school, translated 7 books, and runs a bilingual association Lake Aid, helping families seeking asylum (outdoor activities, tutoring, practical help). Her school E dans l’O has welcomed local families in her own home since 2005, teaching English and French for children (through songs and puppets), teenagers (tutoring and exam preparation) and adults. Suzanne also offers full immersion (full or half-board) with lessons and various activities.

Your homestay & Activities

We generally study French in the morning, but it is always possible to adapt to the students’ activities and to the weather.
The area offers a wide range of beautiful hikes and there is a perfect cycle path around the lake. We have a very safe beach in the village, as well as a golf club and one of the most famous paraglading site. The ski resorts are at a distance of 40 mn by car.
The château of Menthon is very well preserved and definitely worth a visit, as the same family has owned it for over 1000 years.

We like to teach French through board games and Riley Grace, my flatmate, loves cooking and is very talented at crafts.
I run an charity and organise a lot of activities with refugee children, which is also a great opportunity to practice French as most of them are already fluent.

There are also interesting places to visit not far from here, such as Chamonix, Geneva, Chambéry and Lyon.
